Monyak Castle
Bulgaria, Bulgaria
Monyak Castle is a 12th-century medieval fortress in the Rhodope Mountains of southern Bulgaria, near Kardzhali in Shiroko pole village, perched at 587 meters elevation above the Arda River and Studen Kladenets Reservoir.
Known from Fourth Crusade chronicles as Chastel de Moniac, this strategically vital stronghold guarded the Zhelezna Vrata Pass with an elliptical layout featuring a citadel, outer ring, 270-meter northern walls up to 8 meters high, an octagonal tower, and water reservoirs built atop older Roman foundations.
Besieged in 1206 during Bulgarian-Latin wars—where Latin Emperor Henry of Flanders learned of Baldwin I's death—it offered clear sightlines to nearby Vishegrad Fortress and remains challenging to access due to steep cliffs, preserving its role in Crusader-era conflicts.
