Nizwa, Al Dakhiliyah, Oman

---

Nizwa Fort, located in Nizwa in Oman’s Al Dakhiliyah Governorate, is one of the country’s most famous historic landmarks and a remarkable example of Omani defensive architecture.

Built in the 17th century during the reign of Imam Sultan bin Saif Al Ya’rubi, it served as an important center of governance, defense, and community life. The fort is best known for its massive circular tower, one of the largest of its kind in Oman, along with its thick walls, defensive features, hidden passages, and panoramic views over the city, surrounding date palm groves, and nearby mountains.

Its design reflects the military ingenuity of the period and highlights Nizwa’s historical importance as a political and cultural center. Today, Nizwa Fort is a major cultural attraction where visitors can explore historical rooms, exhibits, and traditional architecture while also visiting the nearby Nizwa Souq. Together, they offer a rich insight into Oman’s heritage, history, and traditional way of life.
