Verified Prägrad Castle

Feldkirchen in Kärnten, Austria, Austria

Prägrad Castle, known in German as Burgruine Prägrad, is a ruined medieval hill castle near Feldkirchen in Kärnten, Austria, located on a rocky outcrop above the village of Prägrad and the road toward Ossiach Lake.

The name Prägrad comes from Slavic and means “outer ward” or “area in front of the castle,” suggesting the site may have originally been an outer fortification for a larger complex. It appears in records for the first time in 1166, when it was sold by Conrad, Burgrave of Nuremberg, to the Bishop of Bamberg, and it served to guard the road along the southern shore of Ossiach Lake and to protect the Bambergian town of Feldkirchen.

In the 14th century the castle remained under Bamberg control, then passed to the Habsburg emperor Frederick III, later to the Ernauer family, and finally to Ossiach Abbey in 1628, which held it until the early 19th century; afterwards the estate went into private hands and today the ruins and surrounding forest are owned by the Buttazoni family.

The most notable surviving structure is a well-preserved five-sided Romanesque tower (bergfried) from the first half of the 12th century, while other parts of the main castle and later Gothic–Renaissance buildings outside the fortifications have largely disappeared, with only scattered wall fragments hidden in the vegetation and a former Pflegerhaus (lower castle) that was demolished in 1967. The site is freely accessible and offers a quiet, wooded setting that illustrates the medieval network of castles and roadside defenses in central Carinthia.
