Rila Monastery

Rila Mountains, Kyustendil, Bulgaria

---

The Rila Monastery, nestled in the Rila Mountains of southwestern Bulgaria in Kyustendil Province, is the country’s largest and most famous Eastern Orthodox monastery.

Founded in the 10th century by Saint Ivan (John) of Rila, it has long been a major religious, cultural, and spiritual center of Bulgaria and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Surrounded by forested mountain scenery, the monastery is renowned for its striking architecture, colorful frescoes, ornate arcades, and historic structures such as the medieval Hrelja Tower.

Much of the complex was rebuilt between 1834 and 1862 after a fire and is considered a masterpiece of the Bulgarian National Revival period. Today, Rila Monastery remains an active monastery and one of Bulgaria’s most visited attractions. Its combination of religious significance, artistic beauty, and spectacular mountain setting makes it a symbol of Bulgarian culture and identity.
