Ruin Steuerberg
Steuerberg, Austria, Austria
Ruin Steuerberg is the ruined medieval castle located on a wooded rocky spur near Wabl, an outlying settlement of the municipality of Steuerberg in the Feldkirchen district of Carinthia, Austria.
Originally known in the Middle Ages as Touernich or Dovernik, the castle was probably built in the 11th century by the Eppenstein dukes of Carinthia and later held by the Lords of Touernich as vassals of the Spanheim dukes after the Eppenstein line ended in 1122. By 1603 the complex was still largely intact and partly inhabited, but it gradually fell into disuse and was completely abandoned by 1827, leaving today only a long rectangular enclosure about 70 meters long and up to 20 meters wide, with fragments of walls and the remains of a small chapel dedicated to the Holy Spirit.
The site is freely accessible via a marked hiking path from the village and is also referred to locally as Marbauerschloss, offering a clear view of the entrance to the Engen Gurk valley and serving as one of the main historical attractions of Steuerberg alongside the nearby parish church of Saints Peter and Paul.
