Ruine Liechtenstein
Styria, Austria, Austria
Ruine Liechtenstein in Styria, Austria, is a medieval castle ruin with origins dating back to the 12th century, built by Hugo von Liechtenstein who received the land as a fief from the Babenberg margraves.
This castle was part of the early defense system around the March of Austria and served as the ancestral seat of the House of Liechtenstein, a noble family that later became the rulers of the Principality of Liechtenstein.
The castle was destroyed during the Turkish sieges of Vienna in 1529 and 1683 and remained in ruins for many years until Prince Johann I of Liechtenstein bought it back in 1808. Restoration efforts in the 19th century revived parts of the castle and transformed the surrounding landscape into a romantic garden with artificial ruins and follies.
During World War II, the site was damaged again but continued to be maintained, and today it stands as a historical monument reflecting the region's medieval architecture and the enduring legacy of the Liechtenstein familyRuine Liechtenstein.
