Schackenborg Castle
Tønder, Denmark
Schackenborg Castle, located in Møgeltønder near Tønder, Denmark, dates back to the 13th century when it was originally known as Møgeltønderhus and owned by the Bishop of Ribe.
In 1661, it was given to Count Hans Schack as a reward for his military service, who rebuilt it into an elegant Baroque castle, naming it Schackenborg. The castle remained in the Schack family for 11 generations until 1978, when it returned to the Danish Royal Family. From 1993 to 2014, it served as the residence of Prince Joachim of Denmark.
The castle retains its Baroque architecture with a moat and gatehouse, and the surrounding gardens are beautifully maintained. Today, Schackenborg functions both as a symbol of Danish royal heritage and a cultural site open to the public for guided tours, events, and cultural activities, showcasing its rich history and elegant design along with the charming village setting of Møgeltønder.
