Silkeborg is a town in the middle of the Jutlandic peninsula in Denmark, known for its location on the Gudenå River amidst a lush, hilly landscape with many lakes.

The town's modern development began in 1844 around a paper mill founded by Michael Drewsen, celebrated as the town's founder, which utilized the river for power and transport. Silkeborg grew rapidly, gaining market town status in 1900, and developed into an industrial and commercial center with facilities like breweries and machine factories.

The town is also known for its cultural sites, including the Silkeborg Museum which houses the naturally mummified Tollund Man, significant historical artifacts, and art collections. Silkeborg Bad, a former health spa, became the headquarters for the Gestapo during WWII and now contains a bunker museum and art museum.

The town is a popular recreational area with skiing facilities nearby and hosts events like the World Women's Curling Championships. Silkeborg’s cityscape also features works by architect Anton Rosen, noted for their romantic and national style decorations, contributing to the town’s distinctive charm.​
