Verified Tsaghats Kar Monastery

Armenia, Armenia

Tsaghats Kar Monastery is a historic Armenian monastery built in the 10th century, located in the Vayots Dzor province near the village of Horbategh, overlooking the Yeghegis River.

Its name means "Blooming Stone," possibly referring to the beauty of the site or its carved decorations. The monastery complex is divided into two main sections about 200 meters apart: the older western group constructed from rough basalt including partially ruined churches, and the eastern group built in 1041, featuring the better-preserved Surb Karapet church and one of Armenia's earliest two-story burial chapels.

Tsaghats Kar served as a medieval educational center where people studied painting and was historically important as a stronghold guarding the Syunik principality's capital. The site is noted for its intricate carvings and khachkars (cross-stones) with symbolic imagery, and it offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside including the nearby fortress of Smbataberd.

Despite centuries of wear, it remains a significant cultural and spiritual monument reflecting Armenia's rich heritage.
