Wiesberg Castle
Tobadill, Austria
Wiesberg Castle perches on a rocky outcrop above the Trisanna River at the entrance to the Stanzer Valley near Tobadill, having been built in the 13th century by the Bishopric of Chur. In the late 14th century it passed into the hands of the Counts of Tyrol and became a fief held by the Rottenberger family until 1411, later pledged to the Dukes of Wolkenstein from 1770 to 1840.
The castle witnessed an 1809 skirmish between local militia and Bavarian troops during the Napoleonic Wars and fell into private ownership in the 19th century, remaining closed to the public. Today its medieval walls and towers stand as a silent landmark overlooking the valley and the nearby Trisanna Railway Bridge, visible from the Silvretta-Hochalpenstraße.
