Banhine National Park
Gaza Province, Mozambique
Banhine National Park is a large protected area in Gaza Province, southern Mozambique. Covering about 7,000 square kilometers, it is part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Conservation Area, connecting with other famous parks like Kruger in South Africa and Limpopo in Mozambique. The park is often called the "mini-Okavango" because of its seasonal wetlands, which flood during the rainy season and attract a great variety of birds and other animals.
The landscape includes wetlands, vast savannas, woodlands, and over a thousand pans, small natural pools that can be salty or fresh. During the rainy season, wetlands can cover a significant part of the park, while the dry months reveal open grasslands with scattered trees. The park has a tropical climate, with a rainy season from October to March and a dry season from April to September. The best time to visit is during the cooler dry months, when animals gather around water sources and roads are easier to use.
Banhine is famous for its rich birdlife, with more than 200 recorded species. Endangered wattled cranes, saddle-billed storks, flamingos, pelicans, and many migratory species can be seen, especially when the wetlands are full. The park also has growing populations of mammals thanks to ongoing conservation and rewilding efforts. Visitors may see ostriches, impalas, zebras, reedbuck, oribi, leopards, jackals, honeybadgers, elephants, and even lions. The park’s wetlands host special fish species like the African lungfish, which survive dry periods by burying in mud.
Banhine is remote and suitable for adventurous travelers. Most visitors explore using 4x4 vehicles, and there are a few basic safari tents and camping sites for accommodation. Facilities are simple, giving an authentic wilderness experience. Guided walks and birdwatching are popular, and the park is a paradise for photographers and nature lovers drawn to its wild, untouched beauty.
Local communities still live in and around the park, practicing traditional farming. The government encourages sustainable development outside the reserve to protect wildlife and reduce pressure on natural resources. Illegal hunting and environmental challenges remain, but ongoing conservation work aims to secure the park’s future.
