Verified Niassa Reserve

Niassa Province, Mozambique

Niassa Reserve, located in northern Mozambique across Niassa Province and Cabo Delgado Province, is the country’s largest protected area, covering more than 42,000 square kilometers.

It is one of Africa’s largest remaining wilderness regions and forms part of a transboundary conservation landscape that connects with protected areas in Tanzania. The reserve is famous for its vast miombo woodlands, savannas, rivers, wetlands, and dramatic granite hills. It supports significant populations of elephants, lions, leopards, African wild dogs, buffalo, sable antelope, and more than 400 bird species, making it one of the continent’s most important wildlife strongholds.

Despite its enormous size, Niassa Reserve remains remote and lightly visited, offering a truly wild safari experience. The area is also home to local communities, rich cultural traditions, sacred sites, and ancient rock art, giving it both ecological and cultural significance. Its untouched landscapes and exceptional biodiversity make it one of Mozambique’s greatest natural treasures.
