Sofala Province, Mozambique

---

Marromeu Buffalo Reserve, located in Sofala Province within the vast Zambezi Delta of central Mozambique, is one of Africa’s most important wetland conservation areas.

Established primarily to protect its huge population of African buffalo, the reserve is famous for hosting one of the continent’s largest buffalo herds, numbering in the tens of thousands. The reserve’s landscape consists of floodplains, grasslands, papyrus swamps, forests, rivers, and mangroves that support exceptional biodiversity.

Besides buffalo, it is home to elephants, hippos, antelopes, lions, leopards, crocodiles, and an extraordinary variety of birds, including pelicans and the endangered wattled crane. Known for its remote wilderness and ecological importance, Marromeu Buffalo Reserve plays a vital role in protecting the ecosystems of the Zambezi Delta. Its rich wildlife, vast wetlands, and outstanding birdlife make it one of Mozambique’s most significant natural treasures.
