Botanical Garden
Aarhus Municipality, Denmark, Denmark
Aarhus Botanical Gardens, also called Botanisk Have, is a large 21.5-hectare public park and botanical garden in central Aarhus, Denmark, located just north of the Old Town open-air museum (Den Gamle By).
Founded in 1873 as an experimental garden for fruit trees and useful plants in connection with Aarhus University, it now showcases thousands of plant species from around the world, with all plants named in both Latin and Danish. The garden features varied landscapes including extensive lawns, grand trees, small intimate green rooms, a stream that forms three lakes, Alpine Beds, Danish Plant Community areas, Rose Beds, Theme Gardens, and a Collection of Grasses and Perennials, all tended by volunteer "Friends of the Botonical Garden."
A major highlight is its modern Greenhouses complex, completed in 2014 after a major renovation, which includes four climate zones under glass domes: Rainforest with a tropical canopy reached by a spiral ramp, Desert, Mediterranean, and other zones displaying plants from dusty deserts to lush tropical forests. The outdoor park is open 24/7 year-round with free admission, making it popular for walking, running, picnics, and events, while the Greenhouses also offer free entry and educate visitors about biodiversity, climate, and plant adaptations.
