Verified Casa de Ferro (Iron House)

Maputo, Mozambique

The Casa de Ferro (Iron House) is one of the most unusual and iconic buildings in Maputo, Mozambique.

Prefabricated in Belgium and assembled in Maputo in 1892, the structure is made almost entirely of iron and was originally intended to serve as the residence of the colonial governor. It was designed by Belgian engineer Joseph Danly, although it is often mistakenly attributed to Gustave Eiffel. The building was never used as a residence because the iron structure absorbed and retained too much heat, making it uncomfortable in Maputo’s tropical climate.

Instead, it served various government and institutional purposes over the years. Located beside the Tunduru Botanical Gardens, the Casa de Ferro is now a historic and cultural landmark. Its distinctive metal construction and colonial-era history make it one of the most fascinating architectural attractions in Mozambique’s capital.
