Château Comtal

Vaison-la-Romaine, France, France

---

Château Comtal is a medieval fortress that stands on a rocky hill above the old town of Vaison-la-Romaine in southern France.

Built in the late 12th century by Raymond V, Count of Toulouse, it was designed to strengthen comital authority in the region and overlooks both the medieval town and the surrounding countryside. Originally beginning as a wooden tower, the site was later expanded into a substantial stone castle with defensive walls, buildings, and a prominent keep.

Throughout the Middle Ages, it served as a strategic stronghold and a place of refuge during periods of conflict between local rulers and church authorities. Although now partly in ruins, the castle remains one of the most recognizable landmarks of Vaison-la-Romaine. Its elevated position provides spectacular views of the town, the Ouvèze River, and Mont Ventoux, while its preserved remains offer insight into the region’s medieval history.
