Château de Lacoste

Lacoste, France, France

---

Château de Lacoste is a medieval castle overlooking the hilltop village of Lacoste in the Provence region of southern France.

Originally built in the 11th century, it was expanded and modified over the centuries and became most famous as the residence of the Marquis de Sade, the controversial 18th-century French nobleman and writer. The castle occupies a commanding position with panoramic views across the Luberon countryside. During his time there, the Marquis de Sade renovated parts of the property and even added a theater capable of seating around 120 people.

The château was heavily damaged during the French Revolution and remained largely in ruins for many years. In the modern era, restoration efforts have helped preserve the site, and its association with both the Marquis de Sade and fashion designer Pierre Cardin has made it one of the most well-known historic landmarks in the region.
