Château de Crestet
Crestet, France, France
Château de Crestet is a historic hilltop castle in the village of Crestet in Provence, southern France.
Its origins date back to the 9th century, making it one of the oldest castles in the region. It served as a refuge and summer residence for the Bishops of Vaison-la-Romaine and occupied a strategic position overlooking the surrounding valleys. Over the centuries, the castle was expanded and remodeled, including Gothic-era additions in the 14th century.
It witnessed conflicts involving the Counts of Toulouse, the Wars of Religion, and later suffered damage during the French Revolution, after which it was largely abandoned and used as a source of building materials. In the late 20th century, architect Roger Anger began restoring and stabilizing the site, helping preserve its historic character.
