Château d'Entrechaux

Entrechaux, France, France

---

Château d'Entrechaux is a medieval castle overlooking the village of Entrechaux in the Vaucluse region of southern France.

Dating mainly from the 10th and 11th centuries, it occupies a strategic rocky hilltop and was part of a network of lookout castles that helped monitor the surrounding valleys. The site is unusual because it originally consisted of two connected castles: a smaller fortress built by the Bishops of Vaison and a larger castle developed by local lords.

Together they included defensive walls, chapels, a keep, and other fortifications, serving both religious and military purposes for centuries. The castle was heavily damaged and looted during the French Revolution and later fell into ruin as its stones were reused for local buildings. Today, ongoing restoration efforts have helped preserve the site, which is valued for its rich history, impressive ruins, and panoramic views of the Provençal countryside.
