Château de Pontevès

Pontevès, France, France

---

Château de Pontevès is a historic ruined castle in the village of Pontevès in the Var region of southern France.

The site is first recorded in 1021 and was gradually developed by the noble Pontevès family, becoming an important local stronghold and administrative center during the Middle Ages. Over the centuries, the castle was expanded with halls, towers, and residential facilities, evolving from a defensive fortress into a more comfortable noble residence.

In the 17th century, it was extensively rebuilt by the wealthy financier Pierre Maurel, who transformed it into a grand mansion with more than 50 rooms. Structural problems, inheritance disputes, and changing fortunes led to the castle’s decline, and by the time of the French Revolution it had already fallen into ruin. Today, visitors can explore its surviving gateway, towers, walls, and courtyards, which offer a striking glimpse into the region’s medieval and aristocratic past.
