Château de Thouzon

Le Thor, France, France

---

Château de Thouzon is a medieval fortified monastery located on a hill overlooking Le Thor in the Vaucluse region of southern France.

Founded in the early 11th century, it belonged to the Benedictine monks of the Abbey of Saint-André and served as both a religious center and a defensive stronghold. The complex originally included churches, chapels, towers, walls, and other fortified structures. Over the centuries, it received support from powerful figures such as the Counts of Toulouse and the papacy, helping it become an important religious site in the region.

Although much of the original structure is now in ruins, important features such as the vaulted church, chapel, towers, and rock-cut cistern survive. Today, the site is privately owned but actively restored and maintained, offering visitors a glimpse into Provence’s medieval religious and military heritage along with panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.
