Verified Dragsholm Castle

Hørve, Denmark, Denmark

Dragsholm Castle is one of the oldest secular buildings in Denmark, located near Hørve in the Odsherred region of Zealand.

Originally built around 1215 by Peder Sunesen, the Bishop of Roskilde, it began as a palace and was later strengthened into a powerful medieval fortress. During the Reformation, the castle became Crown property and was used for more than a century as a prison for noble and religious prisoners, including James Hepburn, the Earl of Bothwell and third husband of Mary, Queen of Scots.

After suffering damage during wars with Sweden, it was rebuilt in the Baroque style that largely defines its appearance today. Today, Dragsholm Castle is a historic hotel and restaurant known for its rich heritage, beautiful countryside setting, and local legends. With more than 800 years of history, it is regarded as one of Denmark’s most fascinating and best-preserved historic castles.
