Verified Dronningholm Castle Ruin

Denmark, Denmark

Dronningholm Castle Ruin is the remains of a medieval Danish castle located near Frederiksværk in northern Zealand, Denmark.

Construction began under Valdemar the Great and was completed around 1200 by Valdemar II. According to local legend, the castle was given to Queen Dagmar as a wedding gift, which inspired its name. Once one of the largest castles in Denmark, it was built with moats, a drawbridge, and strong defensive structures overlooking the area around Arresø.

The castle was damaged by fire in 1525 and later dismantled, with some of its building materials reportedly reused elsewhere. Today, visitors can see reconstructed outlines and earthworks that mark the castle’s former layout. The site offers a glimpse into Denmark’s medieval past and provides scenic views over the surrounding landscape, making it a popular historical attraction.
