Nyborg Castle
Nyborg, Denmark, Denmark
Nyborg Castle is a well-preserved medieval castle located in Nyborg on the Danish island of Funen.
Founded around 1170 to 1200, it became one of the most important royal castles in Denmark due to its strategic position by the Great Belt, controlling key routes across the kingdom. The castle played a central role in Danish political history. It served as the main meeting place for the Danehof, Denmark’s medieval parliament, and in 1282 King Eric V Klipping signed the country’s first constitution there.
For centuries, it functioned as both a royal residence and a center of government. Although parts of the castle were damaged during later wars and some buildings were demolished, extensive restoration work in the 20th century preserved the surviving structures. Today, Nyborg Castle operates as a museum and is regarded as one of Denmark’s most significant medieval landmarks, highlighting the country’s royal and parliamentary heritage.
