Palácio da Ponta Vermelha

Maputo, Mozambique

---

The Palácio da Ponta Vermelha, located in Maputo, is the official residence of the President of Mozambique and one of the country’s most important historic landmarks.

Situated in the Ponta Vermelha district overlooking Maputo Bay, the palace serves as a symbol of the Mozambican presidency and national government. Originally built during the colonial era as a warehouse and residence for staff involved in the construction of the railway between Lourenço Marques (now Maputo) and the Transvaal, the building was later expanded into the official residence of the Portuguese governor.

Following Mozambique’s independence in 1975, it became the residence of the country’s president. Known for its elegant architecture, landscaped grounds, and historical significance, the palace is a prominent landmark in Maputo. Although public access is generally limited, it remains an important symbol of Mozambique’s political history and national identity.
