Sønderborg Castle is a historic castle located in the town of Sønderborg on the island of Als in southern Denmark.

Originally founded as a fortified tower around 1158 by Valdemar the Great, it was built to defend the region and was gradually expanded into one of Denmark’s most important medieval fortresses. The castle is especially famous for imprisoning King Christian II, who was held there from 1532 to 1549 after being deposed.

During the 16th century, it was transformed from a fortress into a Renaissance-style castle, giving it much of the appearance it retains today. Today, Sønderborg Castle houses a museum dedicated to the history and culture of southern Jutland. Overlooking Als Fjord, it is one of Denmark’s most significant historic landmarks, offering visitors insight into more than 800 years of Danish history.
