Tranekær Castle
Tranekær, Denmark, Denmark
Tranekær Castle is one of Denmark’s oldest inhabited castles, located on the island of Langeland.
Originally built as a royal fortress around the early 13th century, it has evolved over the centuries from a medieval stronghold into an elegant manor-style residence while retaining many historic architectural features. The castle is easily recognized by its distinctive red exterior, towers, and scenic position overlooking the surrounding landscape.
Since 1659, it has been owned by the Ahlefeldt-Laurvig family, making it one of Denmark’s longest continuously family-owned castle estates. Today, the castle remains privately owned, but its park and grounds are a popular attraction. Visitors can enjoy historic gardens, walking trails, and TICKON, an outdoor art park that blends contemporary artworks with the natural surroundings, creating a unique mix of history, nature, and culture.
