Ancenis is a historic riverside town in western France's Loire-Atlantique department, now part of the larger Ancenis-Saint-Géréon commune since 2019, strategically positioned midway between Nantes and Angers along the Loire River.

Dating back to Roman times as a key crossing point that flourished into a medieval stronghold and trading hub, it features the imposing Château d'Ancenis—originally a 10th-century motte-and-bailey fortress expanded in the 15th and Renaissance eras with a unique chicane drawbridge, gatehouse, and panoramic river views.

Known as the "key to Brittany" for its defensive role against sieges by English and French kings, the town blends its preserved old quarter, medieval houses, Saint Peter Church, and dolmens with modern vineyards and cultural sites amid the scenic Loire Valley.
