Verified Anet

France, France

The Château d'Anet is a stunning 16th-century castle located in the Eure-et-Loir department of France.

It was built between 1547 and 1552 by the architect Philibert Delorme for Diane de Poitiers, the mistress of King Henry II, as a gift from the king. The castle was originally designed with three wings, a chapel, and a large formal garden with classical parterres and a notable gatehouse decorated with sculptures by Benvenuto Cellini.

Its architecture is a fine example of French Renaissance style, marked by the first correct use of the three classical orders in France and an innovative spiral-coffered dome in the chapel, inspired by ancient Rome. Over the centuries, the castle faced destruction during the French Revolution, resulting in many parts being demolished, but some architectural elements and sculptures have been preserved and are now housed in museums or remain as ruins.

Today, only parts of the original structure survive, and it is recognized as a classified historic monument. The castle continues to attract visitors interested in its Renaissance architecture and historical significance, with some interiors still furnished with period and modern pieces.
