Apcher
Prunières, France, France
Apcher is a historic medieval site in the commune of Prunières, in the Lozère department of southern France.
It is best known for the Château d’Apcher, a former feudal stronghold that served as the seat of the powerful Barons and later Marquises of Apchier, one of the major noble families of the historic region of Gévaudan. The castle was developed between the 11th and 14th centuries and occupied a strategic position overlooking the surrounding countryside.
Although much of the fortress fell into ruin after being gradually abandoned in the 17th century, its imposing keep and other remains still reflect its former importance. Today, the medieval site of Apcher is a popular heritage attraction, offering visitors a glimpse into the region’s feudal past along with panoramic views of the Margeride landscape.
