Arboretum Al Gau
Espartignac, France, France
Arboretum Al Gau (correctly called Arboretum Al Gaulhia) is a beautiful 10-hectare botanical garden and landscaped park located at 1125 route de l'Arboretum in Espartignac, Corrèze, in the Limousin region of western France, near the Massif Central.
Created from an old food-producing property by its passionate current owner, it has become a conservation and species-development site cohabiting centuries-old chestnut trees with trees from all five continents, and is recognized as a protected space since 2010 with prestigious labels including "Arbre remarquable" (Remarkable Tree) for its chestnuts and "Jardin remarquable" (Remarkable Garden) since 2017.
The arboretum features a mosaic of environments including a unique peat bog, five ponds, an original marsh, and wet and dry zones that support rich biodiversity, along with over 1,000 varieties of trees and shrubs (some endangered), 80 species of bamboo, numerous grasses, ferns, aquatic plants, water lilies, and spectacular lotus flowers that rise up to 2 meters above the water.
Visitors can explore the park through paths lined with educational panels about trees and biodiversity (mainly for children), view various exhibitions, and enjoy the peaceful setting with its water features, with admission starting from €6 and opening hours from June 1 to September 30, 2025, daily from 14:30 to 18:30. The site is managed by the association "L'arbre et l'eau" which preserves and values this fragile ecosystem while educating the public about protection.
