Arboretum de Combe Noire

The Arboretum de Combe Noire is a small high‑mountain arboretum of about 18–20 hectares in the Isère department, Rhône‑Alpes, near the village of La Motte‑d’Aveillans at the Signaraux‑Les Crêts plateau, at roughly 1,100–1,400 meters above sea level.

Created in the 1990s by local teachers in cooperation with the National Forestry Office, it was planted partly as a social‑educational project that brought together ordinary schoolchildren and children with disabilities to clear fallow land and plant hundreds of trees, and it now functions as a public forest classroom with two clearly marked walking circuits through the trees.

The site is open every day, free of charge, and focuses on native and regionally adapted tree species suited to the harsh mountain climate, allowing visitors to explore different forest types while also learning about sustainable forestry and the effects of climate change on mountain woods.
