Arboretum de l'Abiétinée
Malzéville, France, France
Arboretum de l'Abiétinée is a unique natural park and arboretum located on the heights of Malzéville, just northeast of Nancy in Lorraine, France.
Created in the late 19th century through the passion of botanists and landscape gardeners, particularly after Eugène Schott and Emile Kronberg founded the "Société des belles plantes" (Society of Beautiful Plants) in 1902 to promote rustic plants suited to the Lorrain climate, the park features a 2-hectare wooded area containing an impressive collection of rare plant species including 25 genera and 277 species, with a special focus on conifers, sequoias, cedars, alpine species, and a Lonicera maackii honeysuckle.
The arboretum was created by landscape gardener Victor Didier, who was connected to the Nancy School (École de Nancy) Art Nouveau movement, making the site both scientifically valuable and artistically inspiring for Art Nouveau artists like Émile Gallé. Since August 22, 2013, the park has been classified and protected as a natural and historical site at the national level, covering 4.3 hectares together with the nearby Cure d'air Trianon air-cure park, and today it remains a protected natural space recognized for its ecological and historical interest, with an association called "Les amis de l'Abiétinée" dedicated to preserving this remarkable botanical heritage.
