Arboretum de Segrez
Saint-Sulpice-de-Favières, France, France
The Arboretum de Segrez is a historic 24-hectare arboretum and English-style park located within the Domaine de Segrez on Rue Alphonse Lavallée in Saint-Sulpice-de-Favières, Essonne, Île-de-France, France, about 39 kilometers from Paris.
Established in 1857 by Pierre Alphonse Martin Lavallée, a renowned French botanist and horticulturist, the arboretum was created as a scientific undertaking with a herbarium and botanical library, and by 1875 had become one of the largest collections of woody plants in the world through the introduction of tree species from around the globe.
The park originally dates to the late 18th century as an English garden with an artificial grotto, and was transformed into the arboretum in the mid-19th century under the Lavallée family ownership when they introduced extraordinary tree species. Today it is a private domain featuring remarkable trees—some centuries old and others young—many labeled as "remarkable trees" for their rarity or age, with the 18th-century château, orangery, and sheepfold all registered as historical monuments since 2009.
Visits are open year-round on Mondays but only by guided tour with advance reservation required, lasting about 1.5 to 2 hours at 8 euros per person, with the wrought-iron gate entrance located behind the church of Saint-Sulpice-de-Favières.
