Arboretum Roure Marcel Kroenlein
Roure, France, France
The Arboretum Roure Marcel Kroenlein, also simply called Arboretum de Roure or Arboretum Marcel Kroenlein, is a 15-hectare high-altitude arboretum located in Roure, Alpes-Maritimes, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region of France, perched between 1,280 and 1,700 meters above sea level on the edge of Mercantour National Park overlooking the Tinée valley.
Created in 1988 by botanist Marcel Kroenlein, who was former director of Monaco's Exotic Garden, and by Michèle Ramin, it is the first and only high-altitude arboretum in Europe and the only European mountain arboretum linked to contemporary art. The arboretum functions as a living museum of trees that protects rare and disappearing mountain species from around the world, featuring nearly 400 planted trees including about 137 exotic species that have been acclimatized to the mountain environment.
Its collections include mountain-stage trees (between 1,000–1,700 meters altitude), a fruticetum, a collection of sempervivum (rock ջիլավներ), the wild rose heritage of the Alpes-Maritimes, an experimental vegetable garden, and traditional mountain crafts knowledge. The site has scientific, educational, artistic, tourist, and social purposes and is open daily year-round from 10:00–18:00 in summer and 10:00–16:00 in winter, with free visits and admission fees, except for exceptional closures on Easter Monday, December 25, or when snow is too abundant.
