Bayonne Botanical Garden
Bayonne, France, France
The Bayonne Botanical Garden, also known as the Jardin botanique des Remparts, is a charming 3,000 m² botanical garden located in Bayonne, Pyrénées-Atlantiques, in the French Basque Country, perched atop a 7-meter-high Vauban bastion between the city's cathedral and ramparts.
Established in the late 1990s and inaugurated in 1990, this peaceful green oasis blends Japanese and Basque inspirations, featuring ponds with colorful Koi carp, waterfalls, fountains, bright red Japanese bridges, walkways made from recycled materials, and landscaped terraces offering panoramic views of Bayonne Cathedral.
The garden contains approximately 1,000 plant taxa arranged in 11 groupings, including bamboos, an outstanding collection of Japanese maples, albizias, agapanthus, cycads, Mexican sages, aquatic plants like papyrus, and rare species such as vibrant peonies and delicate dodecatheons, with each plant labeled for easy identification and organized by color and scent for a uniquely sensory experience.
Certified as an EVE (Ecological Green Space), the garden is maintained sustainably without pesticides with responsible water management, reflecting authenticity and environmental commitment. It is open Tuesday through Saturday during warmer months (approximately April 8 to October 1, from 10 AM to 6 PM), offers free admission with easy disabled access, and is accessible via the city's free shuttle bus at stop number 7 on Avenue du 11 Novembre and Allée de Tarride.
