Castle Commarin
Côte-d'Or department in Eastern France, France
Castle Commarin in the Côte-d'Or department of eastern France has remained in the same family for over 900 years, passing through 26 generations without ever being sold. The site likely began as a Gallo-Roman villa and was first documented as a fortified house in 1214. It was rebuilt as a fortified castle in the 14th century by the de Cortiamble family, featuring cylindrical towers and a vaulted chapel.
In the 16th century, the castle was transformed into a more modern residence with decorative sculptures, tapestries, and paintings. The 17th and 18th centuries brought major reconstruction including elegant stables and classical facades, with furnishings by Marie-Judith de Vienne, grandmother of Talleyrand.
The castle survived the French Revolution and World War II intact, preserving much of its historical character. The original French formal gardens were replaced by an English-style park in the 19th century, which is currently being restored. Today, the castle remains a historic monument, open to visitors and offering a glimpse into centuries of aristocratic life in Burgundy.
