Castle of Bannegon
Bannegon, France, France
The Castle of Bannegon is a historic fortified residence in the Cher department of central France, located on the former frontier between the regions of Berry and Bourbonnais.
Its origins date back to the 12th century, although some of its oldest surviving structures, including the impressive Barres Tower, were built in the 13th or early 14th century. The castle was protected by moats, a drawbridge, and defensive walls, reflecting its strategic military role. Bannegon played a part in several important historical events.
During the Wars of Religion in 1568, Marie de Brabançois successfully led the defense of the château during a fifteen-day siege. Although the castle was partially damaged in the 16th century, it was rebuilt with Renaissance-style additions while retaining much of its medieval character. Today, the castle remains privately owned and is recognized as a historic monument.
Known for its imposing keep, drawbridge, and well-preserved medieval appearance, it stands as one of the region’s most distinctive historic landmarks and continues to be celebrated through local heritage and medieval-themed events.
