Château Charles VII in Mehun-sur-Yèvre, France, is a medieval fortress with origins dating back to the early 13th century but was significantly transformed into a luxurious residence between 1367 and 1390 by Jean, Duke of Berry.

The castle played a key role in late medieval France and was one of King Charles VII’s favorite residences, where he died in 1461. Originally built as a defensive fortress, it features a trapezoid layout with multiple towers including a large cylindrical keep and defensive machicolations that remain visible today.

The castle was a center of political and military power during the Hundred Years’ War and housed important Gothic and early Renaissance architectural details and decorations. Over centuries, it suffered fires, damage during religious wars, and looting, leading to partial ruin by the 18th century.

Now a protected historic monument and museum, the castle offers insight into medieval warfare, noble life, and the reign of Charles VII, including its connection to Joan of Arc and the shifting fortunes of the French monarchy.
