Château d’Ainay-le-Vieil is one of the best-preserved medieval castles in central France.

Built in the 14th century on the site of an older fortress, it is often called “Little Carcassonne” because of its circular fortified walls, towers, moat, and impressive defensive system. Located on a strategic frontier between French and English territories during the Hundred Years’ War, the castle played an important military role and was one of the few strongholds in the region to remain under French control after the Battle of Poitiers in 1356.

In the early 16th century, a stylish residence in the Louis XII and early Renaissance style was added within the medieval walls, creating a unique blend of fortress and manor house. Still owned by descendants of the same family that acquired it in 1467, the château is also renowned for its beautiful gardens, canals, and landscaped grounds.
