Verified Château d'Angers

Angers, France, France

Château d’Angers is a massive medieval fortress located in the city of Angers in France’s Loire Valley.

Originally established by the Counts of Anjou in the 9th century and greatly expanded in the 13th century under King Louis IX (Saint Louis), it was built on a strategic hill overlooking the Maine River and became one of the most important strongholds in western France. The castle is famous for its impressive defensive walls and 17 large round towers built from contrasting light stone and dark slate.

Over the centuries it served as both a military fortress and a residence for the powerful Dukes of Anjou, who added elegant living quarters and commissioned important works of art. Today, Château d’Angers is best known for housing the Apocalypse Tapestry, the world’s largest surviving medieval tapestry cycle. As one of the region’s most visited historic monuments, it offers visitors a remarkable combination of medieval architecture, beautiful gardens, and centuries of French history.
