Château de Baugé is a historic castle in Baugé-en-Anjou, western France, originally built as a hunting residence for René of Anjou, known as “Good King René,” during the 15th century.

It stands on the site of an earlier medieval fortress founded in 1007 by Fulk III, Count of Anjou, who chose the location for its strategic defensive position. Constructed between 1454 and 1465, the château reflects the transition from medieval military architecture to a more comfortable and elegant noble residence. René used it as a favorite retreat for hunting, entertaining guests, and hosting lavish feasts in the surrounding forests of Anjou.

Over the centuries, the castle passed through the hands of various owners and experienced periods of decline before undergoing restoration. Today, it is a protected historic monument and museum where visitors can explore exhibits about King René, the history of Anjou, and the château’s architectural heritage.
