Château de Brest is the oldest monument in the city of Brest and one of the most important military fortresses in France.

Standing at the entrance to the Penfeld River and overlooking the harbor of Brest, it has occupied a strategic position for more than 1,700 years, evolving from a Roman fort into a powerful medieval and later Vauban-era fortress. Because of its location, the castle played a key role in defending Brittany and France’s Atlantic coast.

Over the centuries, it was expanded and strengthened by various rulers to keep pace with advances in military technology, resulting in a unique blend of Roman, medieval, and early modern architecture. Today, Château de Brest remains an active military site and houses the National Maritime Museum. Its imposing walls, towers, and rich history make it one of Brittany’s most significant landmarks and a symbol of the region’s long maritime heritage.
