Château de Brie-Comte-Robert
Brie-Comte-Robert, France, France
Château de Brie-Comte-Robert is a medieval castle located in the town of Brie-Comte-Robert, southeast of Paris.
It was built around 1160 by Robert I of Dreux, brother of King Louis VII, as a fortified stronghold guarding important routes through the region. The castle originally featured a square layout, towers, and surrounding moats, making it one of the area's most important defensive sites. Over the centuries, the castle evolved from a military fortress into a prestigious noble residence.
Under Jeanne d’Évreux, widow of King Charles IV, it was enlarged and beautified, becoming a favored residence for members of the French nobility. It later suffered damage during wars and periods of political unrest, including the Hundred Years’ War and the Fronde. Partly ruined and abandoned for many years, the castle was eventually protected as a historic monument and underwent extensive restoration.
Today, it stands as one of the finest examples of medieval architecture in the Paris region, with ongoing archaeological and conservation work helping visitors discover more than eight centuries of French history.
