Originally serving a military purpose, it became a Protestant worship site during the Reformation, leading to its pillaging by the Catholic League in 1589 and later seizure after the 1685 Revocation of the Edict of Nantes.
Now a listed historical monument since 1925, it functions as a visitors' center showcasing its Renaissance architecture, though one wing was lost to an 18th-century fire.
