Verified Château de Châlus-Chabrol

Châlus, France

Château de Châlus-Chabrol is a medieval castle located in the town of Châlus in southwestern France, known mainly for its historical significance as the place where King Richard the Lionheart of England was mortally wounded by a crossbow bolt during a siege in 1199.

The castle dates back to the 11th to 13th centuries, featuring a circular keep and residential buildings that were expanded in the 17th century. It was strategically important as it guarded key routes connecting Limoges, Paris, Spain, and the coasts of the Mediterranean and Atlantic. Over the centuries, the castle was a fortress for the Viscounts of Limoges and later passed through several noble families including the Sully, Albret, Borgia, and Bourbon. Richard the Lionheart's entrails are said to be buried in the castle chapel.

Though partially ruined and dismantled during the French Revolution, the remains have been preserved and restored, and the castle is recognized as a historical monument, attracting visitors interested in its rich medieval past and connection to the famous English king.
