Verified Château de Châteaubriant

Châteaubriant, France

Château de Châteaubriant is a medieval fortress in Châteaubriant, France, first mentioned around 1030-1042 as a wooden motte-and-bailey castle built by Brient to control the Pays de la Mée region, later rebuilt in stone with a square keep around 1100, two halls, and a Romanesque chapel completed in the 13th century.

Expanded in the 13th-14th centuries with curtain walls, towers, and gatehouses like the 25-meter-high upper-ward gate and Pavillon des Champs, it saw sieges during the Breton-French wars, including a 1488 capture, followed by restorations under Françoise de Dinan with Flamboyant Gothic fireplaces and bastions.

In the 16th century, the Renaissance era brought the Bâtiment des Gardes around 1500 and Jean de Laval's Italianate wing after 1532, featuring large windows, tuff pilasters, sculpted dormers, and a grand brick-and-schist gallery with Doric loggias, blending defensive medieval elements with elegant residential architecture overlooking the Chère River.

Today, the divided upper and lower wards host guided tours, exhibitions, and family activities, showcasing ten centuries of history from military outpost to noble residence amid preserved ruins like the 18th-century-collapsed keep.
