Château de Châteaurenard is a medieval fortress that stands on Griffon Hill overlooking the town of Châteaurenard in Provence.

Its origins date back to the 10th century, when a wooden stronghold was established by the local lord Raynardus, whose name was later given to the town. In the 12th century, it was rebuilt in stone and expanded into a powerful defensive castle. The fortress played an important role in regional history and even served as a refuge for Pope Benedict XIII in 1403 during the Western Schism.

Its towers were strengthened over time to adapt to new military technologies, making it one of the key strongholds of medieval Provence. Although much of the castle was damaged and dismantled over the centuries, its surviving towers and sections of ramparts remain impressive landmarks. Today, the ruins are protected as a historic monument and offer visitors panoramic views of the surrounding Provençal landscape while highlighting the area’s rich medieval heritage.
