Château de Coligny, located in Châtillon-Coligny in the Loire Valley, began as a medieval fortress overlooking the Loing Valley.

Its most notable surviving feature is a large stone keep dating from around 1180, making it a rare example of 12th-century military architecture in France. The castle became closely associated with the powerful Coligny family, particularly Admiral Gaspard II de Coligny, who transformed it during the Renaissance.

He added elegant galleries, terraces, an impressive orangery, and a sculpted well attributed to the renowned artist Jean Goujon, turning the fortress into a prestigious residence. Much of the château was demolished after the French Revolution, and a smaller residence was built on the site in 1854. Today, the medieval keep, Renaissance orangery, and historic well remain as important landmarks, preserving the memory of one of the region’s most significant noble estates.
