Château de Fougères is one of the largest and best-preserved medieval fortresses in Europe.

Built on a naturally defended rocky site surrounded by the Nançon River and marshlands, it played a crucial role in protecting the eastern border of the Duchy of Brittany from neighboring regions and kingdoms. The castle originated as a wooden stronghold in the 11th century and was rebuilt in stone after being destroyed by King Henry II of England in 1166.

Over the following centuries, it was expanded into a vast fortress with multiple defensive walls and numerous towers, reflecting the evolution of medieval military architecture. Today, the château is a major historic landmark featuring impressive ramparts, towers, and courtyards that closely resemble their medieval appearance.
